EXHIBITED
London Arts, Detroit, Epstein: Retrospective Exhibition of Sculpture and Drawings, February 21 - March 18, 1967, travelling to Dunkelman Gallery, Toronto, May 4 - 27, 1967, catalogue #10

Sir Jacob Epstein was well known for his sculptural work. His portraits were modeled on many important figures of his day, including writers, musicians and scientists. In this case, an important educator, Lucy Donelly was the subject of this half length bust. She would have been an intimate friend of the artist, and it is these portraits, often of Epstein's inner circle that are classfied as more smooth in texture and seem more sentimental and personal in nature.

Lucy Donelly attended Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn, and then attended Bryn Mawr College. She became a professor and the head of the English department in 1911. During the summers and her sabbaticals, she traveled the world.

Please note: a copy of the original Dunkelman Gallery exhibition catalogue is included with this lot.
