A Japanese Lacquer Model of a Palanquin, Meiji Period, 19th Century

A miniature model exquisitely made in the form of a norimono, with carefully constructed sliding doors, hinged roof flaps, and a long carrying pole. The windows are covered with removable bamboo curtains, each bordered with orimono. The model is lacquered and adorned with gilt roundels and metal mounts.

Each interior panel is decorated with exquisitely painted birds and flowers against a fully gilded ground. The bottom is laid with a woven bamboo tatami mat bordered with silk orimono.
