In October of 1913, J.E.H MacDonald and Lawren Harris traveled to Quebec’s Laurentian region, seeking to express their nacent ideas of a new style of Canadian art. They were inspired by expressive, dynamic landscapes by contemporary Nordic artists such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela they experiened at the famed Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, NY earlier that year. Those works were proof to them that the land surrounding them was as worthy a subject as any other, and deserved their celebration. That fortified confidence resulted in works such as this one and Harris’ Laurentians, lot 215 in this sale.

MacDonald had already begun exploring these ideas on his own in Toronto, namely with his intimate, painterly depictions of High Park, such as lot 219 in this sale. Works like these so impressed Harris that when he saw them for the first time in 1911, he asked to be introduced to the artists, hastening the formation of the Group of Seven. Their 1913 sketching tip to Quebec resulted in cruical early steps into a new era of Canadian Art.
