Between 1906 and 1910, Emily Carr lived in Vancouver and taught art classes, often taking her students outdoors to paint the environment. Doris Shadbolt notes that Carr's work from this era consisted primarily of small-scale watercolours. This piece looks as though it was painted from the vantage point of Crab Park in downtown Vancouver, looking across the Burrard Inlet to North Vancouver. In the distance are the North Shore mountains and at the lower left side, likely the Mission Indian Reserve No. 1 in North Vancouver. Emily Carr’s close friend Sophie Frank lived on the reserve and was a member of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). In Klee Wyck, Carr writes how she loved to take the ferry from downtown Vancouver to the North Shore to visit Sophie:

“Behind the village stood mountains topped by the grand old “Lions” twin peaks, very white and blue. The nearer mountains were every shade of young foliage, tender grey-green, getting greener and greener till, when they were close, you saw that the village grass outgreened them all.”
