Dorothy Knowles dedicated her long and internationally recognized career to expressing the ephemeral, mutable, yet expansive qualities of landscape, particularly that of her native Saskatchewan. Her canvases from the 1960s, such as this one, are exceedingly rare to auction. In them, she incorporates into her representational practice the influence of the cutting edge abstract painterly theory she engaged with at the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops in north-central Saskatchewan. The resulting effect from her use of media is an expression of light as both delicate and dramatic at once.
