This painting is one of six commissioned in 1950 by the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association (now the Forest Products Association of Canada) to advocate for enhanced public awareness of Canada’s forests as both an economic driver and a collective responsibility. The paintings, known as “Trees of Canada”, each documented one of the tree species most commonly employed by the industry.

The set comprises works by A.Y. Jackson and A. J. Casson (both in this month’s Live auction on November 23) and the four works in this auction by Arbuckle, Cloutier, Comfort and Macdonald. The paintings were subsequently made into black-and-white interpretations in pen and ink as well as colour reproductions in letterpress and silkscreen. The latter were printed under Casson’s supervision by Sampson-Matthews Ltd., the Toronto-based graphic art company of which Casson had become vice-president and art director in 1946.
