PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Toronto

In the fall of 1933, Dr. Frederick Banting spent approximately two and a half months journeying across Europe and the UK. The voyage was undertaken to attend a medical conference in Madrid, and fortunately, Banting took the opportunity to produce a group of en plein air oil sketches capturing what he encountered. Although the exact location of this work is unknown, the style and colouring of the brightly lit architecture at the centre of this work hold strong similarities to other known examples, with titles referencing the cities of Seville and Madrid. The majority of these examples also bear Henrietta Banting's authenticity stamp, suggesting they were a part of Mrs. Banting's collection following Dr. Banting's passing in 1941. Banting, however, was well known for gifting his paintings to friends, and an example from this trip titled "Granada" hung in the 1941 University of Toronto Hart House memorial exhibition for Banting from the collection of Sadie Gairns, the original owner of Banting's "The Lab," 1925, sold by Heffel in November 2018. In these intimate observations of day-to-day Spanish life and culture, Banting produced a wonderful counterpoint to his beloved expressions of the Canadian landscape.
