This is a fascinating early example of A.J. Casson's work in waterclour, a medium that would become essential for the artist. It was produced when Casson was not quite 20 years old, very near the time his family moved from Guelph, Ontario to Toronto. The young artist was still yet to become employed at the commercial art firm of Rous and Mann, where he would meet and apprentice for Franklin Carmichael. The guidance and friendship that Carmichael and other Group of Seven members would soon provide Casson would help transform him into one of the most renowned and collected artists of his era.

The inclusion of the small country house in a larger pastoral vista is an interesting and notable aspect of the composition. Although it differs stylistically from what would become Casson’s more typical approach of centering structures toward the foreground, it serves as an important thematic forerunner to what would become Casson's lifelong relationship with rural architecture within the landscape, always expressed with a notable warmth and humanity
