PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Ontario

John Coxwell (1516 - 1618) made a fortune in the wool trade in Gloucestershire in the 16th century and, in 1574, he bought the estate of Ablington, Gloucestershire. In 1590, he built a fine, multi-gabled house on the estate, known as Ablington Manor. This portrait is believed to be of John Coxwell's son, born circa 1544. The inscription, dated 1612, puts his age as 68. A very similar portrait of John Coxwell, dated 1614, is in the collection of the Corinium Museum, Cirencester.
