LITERATURE
Charles Sorlier, Chagall Lithographs, Volume V: 1974-1979, 1984, reproduced page 234, catalogue # CS 38

Marc Chagall’s inspiration for this print was the performance of Mozart’s fairytale opera “The Magic Flute” at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 1967, a sumptuous and extravagant production for which Chagall also designed the sets and costumes. Here, the whimsical forest setting mirrors the rhythms of Mozart's arrangement; nestled in cooler tones of a swirling, shaking forest, the angelic figure in the center plays the flute for an ensemble of dancing creatures, while lyrical swells of yellow and climactic clashes of red burst triumphantly through the landscape. Lively and musical, this is one of Chagall’s finest images. Widely reproduced as a poster, this lithograph is from the edition of only 200 signed and numbered copies.
