PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Toronto

Frederick Varley produced this delicate drawing on his 1938 voyage to the Arctic aboard the RMS Nascopie, which took place between July and September of that year. Varley was eager for his own journey north after viewing the dazzling depictions by his fellow Group of Seven members A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris based on their excursions earlier in the decade. The artworks inspired by the mystical vistas Varley experienced, contributed his own distinctive artistic voice and nuanced sense of line to the theme of the far north in Canadian art.
