One of the most influential figures in 20th Century photography, John Szarkowski was the director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art from 1962 to 1991. In 1973 he published Looking at Photographs which became a seminal text for students of photography.

The Museum of Modern Art has an edition of Prairie, Lincoln County, Minnesota in their collection.
