LITERATURE
Charles Sorlier, Chagall Lithographs V, 1974 - 1979, 1984, reproduced and listed page 212, listed page 249, catalogue #CS 21
This work was engraved by Charles Sorlier under the direction of Marc Chagall, after Chagall's painted design for the stained glass window in the synagogue at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Centers in Jerusalem. A master printmaker, Sorlier joined the Paris atelier of Fernand Mourlot in 1948, where he assisted artists such as Matisse, Picasso, and Léger in the production of their print works. It was his relationship with Chagall that would prove to be the most significant, and the two formed a close artistic relationship that lasted through the remainder of Chagall's life.
The production of these "after works" involved close collaborartion between painter and printmaker. Sorlier would create trial proofs based on the original paintings, while Chagall would rework and touch up the resulting images in gouache or pastel. The final image can be considered a new creation rather than a reproduction, borne out of the harmonious relationship between Chagall and Sorlier.
