Jessie Oonark is celebrated for her bold use of colour and design, and “Woman” is a quintessential example of her unique style. The iconic print features vivid hues and flat planes that are outlined in black, creating a dynamic visual impact. This technique, rooted in her background in textile arts, emphasizes bold outlines and bright colours, resulting in a composition that is both modern and timeless.

The Baker Lake printshop debut into graphic art featured this very print on its catalogue cover, highlighting its significance and appeal. The interplay of geometry, abstraction and symmetry brings to life the image of a woman in her winter dress. The brilliant colours accentuate the contrasting shades of what would have been caribou skin, expertly assembled into traditional parka designs. With her calm demeanor and outstretched arms, she epitomizes the essence of warmth, caregiving and cultural heritage.
