Acquired in Tokyo, Japan by an Important Private Collection, Quebec, 1972, while working as an executive for the Bank of Montreal

Ink and colour on paper mounted on silk. The scenes depicting vignettes of young boys within a walled garden of an elaborate palace, with tall trees in the foreground and background, large scholar rocks and a cloudy sky, the children's activities include cockfighting, chasing dragonflies, cooking, tree climbing, toy horse, a monkey parade, reenacting royalty, and swimming. Wood frames.

The theme of ‘hundred boys’ was a popular motif in East Asian painting since the Chinese Song Dynasty (960-1279). It is rarer in Korean art, but still invokes a family’s wish for a long and continuous lineage through male heirs. The present set of panels are finely painted in its colours, details and fantastic architecture. Rather than combining to form one continuous scene, each panel is a separate snapshot of children playing in a garden – and each of them are participating in a different game. These panels would have been likely commissioned by an aristocratic family and a prized feature within their household.
