LITERATURE
Doris McCarthy, The Good Wine: An Artist Comes of Age, 1991, page 26

McCarthy travelled extensively in Italy throughout in her life. In her autobiography, McCarthy recalls how during an initial trip in 1951, she “tramped miles along Roman streets, with sudden stops in front of each fresh masterpiece…” and was “predictably enthralled” with Florence. In 1962, she lived with an Italian artist friend in Rome for a few months, learning basic Italian and exploring the city and region in her "little Fiat". Executed in 2000, "Side Street off the Piazza Sarteano" depicts a charming scene of modern Italian life within a Tuscan hillside village.

“Twice Around the World: Works by Doris McCarthy” comes to Heffel from a private collector and personal friend of the artist, committed to the promotion of McCarthy’s legacy. The works included were acquired directly from McCarthy’s Estate in 2019, and since then, the inspired patron has donated more than 400 artworks to the University of Toronto Scarborough’s Doris McCarthy Gallery. The thoughtful division of the collection ensures McCarthy’s work is comprehensively represented in the public domain and accessible to scholars, art professionals and the community. Heffel is honoured to present a select group of works from this important collection for private collectors to embrace and enjoy.
