Hortense Gordon's work in abstraction came at the cusp of a new era of painting in Canada. She was a founding member of Painters Eleven, the first abstract painting group in English Canada, and the counterpart of Quebec-based groups Les Automatistes, Les Plasticiens and Prisme d'yeux. She was the first Canadian artist to study under Hans Hoffman in the mid-1940s and was by influenced by the work of some Canada's earliest abstract pioneers such as Bertram Brooker and Kathleen Munn. She was the eldest member of Painters Eleven and, along with Alexandra Luke, was one of only two female members.
