The consignor's father-in-law purchased the property 26 Nugent Street in Port Arthur, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) in 1960 with all of the original furnishings, tapestries and artwork intact. The house was built in 1908 by coal magnate Louis Walsh, owner of the Walsh Coal and Land Company and brother of RCMP Superintendent James Morrow Walsh. After Louis' passing, his son Richard Grenville Walsh lived in the house until the 1950's. This painting was discovered in the house upon its purchase and was passed down to the present owner. It is presumed that Louis Walsh was the original owner of the work, which depicts an indigenous settlement on Black Bay, Lake Superior, north of Thunder Bay.
