This Day in History, 1912-2024: How an Emily Carr painting turned up at an estate sale on Long Island for $50
Everybody who’s ever attended a garage or estate sale has hoped to find something rare and expensive. But Allen Trebitz never could have dreamed of finding a 1912 Emily Carr painting of a memorial pole in Haida Gwaii in a barn in East Hampton, New York. In fact, the Long Island art dealer had never even heard of Carr when he spotted a small painting at the top of the barn wall last spring.

Emily Carr painting bought for $50 at barn sale could bring $148,000 at auction
The Canadian auction house Heffel was recently presented with a seemingly forgotten painting by Emily Carr (1871-1945) that was discovered at a barn sale in the Hamptons several months ago by a New York-based dealer who thought it might be special. The price was right, too.

$50 Emily Carr painting could now fetch $200,000 at auction
Collecting dust in an old barn in New York state, a 1912 painting of a bear on top of a memorial pole by Canadian icon Emily Carr was snapped up for $50. It’s soon going to auction at an estimated value of between $100,000 and $200,000. It will first be displayed in four cities across the country, starting in Calgary, before the auction in Toronto on Nov. 20.

Emily Carr painting bought for $50 could fetch $200K at auction
When art dealer Allen Treibitz went to a barn sale in New York's Hamptons a few months ago, a painting hanging in the old structure immediately caught his eye. The artwork depicting a carved grizzly bear atop a memorial totem pole bore the signature of renowned British Columbian painter Emily Carr, but Treibitz was unfamiliar with her work and legacy.

Auction house sells historic collection of Canadian fighter pilot turned art dealer
When Vancouver art dealer Torben Kristiansen died at the age of 92 last July, he left behind a trove of Canadian paintings. Squirrelled away in the gallery he established in the 1960s, Kristiansen had kept two important abstractions by Lawren Harris, several landscapes by Emily Carr and an early Jean-Paul Riopelle estimated to be worth $2.5-million to $3.5-million.
