EXHIBITED
Equinox Gallery, Vancouver, Gathie Falk, 2010
This work is part of Gathie Falk’s 2009/2010 series of small still life paintings, which was shown at her 2010 solo exhibition at Equinox Gallery.
Yellow Tablecloth, Coffee & Crustata, with its beautifully set table, ready for friends to sit down for coffee, is a perfect example of the importance of the table setting as still life in Gathie Falk’s artistic practice. A closer look reveals a subtle manipulation in the placement of the objects, which is classic for the artist. Teacups and forks are laid in straight lines, and saucers are stacked, giving a sense of repetition. The tabletop has a tilted-up perspective which shows the pattern of the yellow gingham tablecloth, and the shadows playing over the surface.
This is an outstanding example of Falk’s veneration of the everyday, and her love of texture and repeated patterns.
