Far more than his contemporaries in the Group of Seven, A.Y. Jackson was inclined to paint on both sides of his supports. At times, he would do so when he abandoned what he felt was an unsuccessful composition, or when he simply ran out of boards while sketching on-site. In some instances, however, both sides of the board would feature complete works, as seen here. The image presented as front facing is a classic Jackson interpretation of a dramatic Georgian Bay evening. The size of the board also suggests a circa date prior to 1935, the approximate time when Jackson stopped using his 8.5 by 10.5 inch format in Ontario. This likely places it within the formal Group of Seven period which ended in 1933. The verso image, by contrast, is a less typical Jackson composition of a lake in autumn, with near-bare tree branches dominating almost all of the foreground. Interestingly, it was this side that Jackson chose to sign, suggesting his confidence in it. As with all of Jackson’s double-sided boards, the true front and back often remain an interesting point of conjecture.
