EXHIBITED
Galerie Simon Blais, Montreal, Espaces optiques, March 19 - May 2, 2020

Jacques Hurtubise discovered minimalist and Op Art while on numerous visits to New York in the 1960s, in the company of notable artists such as Claude Tousignant and Guido Molinari. The selection of the artist’s Op Art paintings in this sale rely upon the principle of the ‘’grid’’, which allows for a certain compositional organization that is at once “all-over” and wholly dedicated to pure abstraction without any reference to nature. Within this grid, a motif is repeated yet altered and varied in a deliberate, almost studious manner. The audacious use of fluorescent green and pink delivers an intensely vibrant composition.
