Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Guido Molinari explored the motif of multiple stripes that together amount to a monochromatic effect, which he referred to as Quantifiers. Here, Quantificateur rouge demonstrates extremely well the energetic power of red on its own. Upon close and attentive observation one can perceive that while indeed this is a monochromatic field, there is variation in the tonality of red. Molinari structured this composition in vertical bands with faint varying chromatic tones that reveal themselves from stripe to stripe, as subtle as a watermark. As such, the canvas is not static, but rather provides the viewer with room to move across the composition’s many very slight variations in tone. Variations in the width of each band, which are also slightly slanted, deliver an overall retinal experience that is nothing short of stunning.
