The optical effect in Frumence recalls the black and white compositions of Frank Stella and his use of grids in his compositions. The patterns start moving, and despite what at first sight seems rigid, Hurtubise’s complete admiration for Jackson Pollock emerges – thus emulating the New York school rather than Paris. As well, his love for Mark Rothko’s œuvre and what will become known as his “constant single image” is apparent here. Hurtubise’s numerous compositions produced in this series illustrate well the concept of pattern repetition, and the visual effect is increased tenfold by tilting the canvas onto its tip, in the shape of a diamond – a far more arresting presentation for the admiring observer.
