EXHIBITED
Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, McEwen 1953-73, September 30 - October 28, 1973, catalogue #33
Mira Godard Gallery, Toronto, circa 1974

This composition is from a series of predominantly large works in which Jean McEwen returns to using a mix of shiny varnish and oil paint. The margins on each side of this work contribute to the effect of tension on the surface, while the contrast of the earthy tones and the bright yellow in the margins bring a theatricality to the painting. The misty atmosphere recalls both the aquatic surfaces found in pre-Raphaelite compositions and the pools of water lilies painted by Claude Monet at the end of his life, which McEwen admired greatly.
