EXHIBITED
Galerie Simon Blais, Montreal, Ferron-Riopelle Duos, February 2 - March 30, 2019

A veritable haiku poem of oil paint on canvas, this little composition contains all of the trademark elements of Jean Paul Riopelle’s major works. Thick globs of paint are feverishly applied with jabs of the palette knife and the resulting mastery leaves us with a sensuous luxury object. It is not unlike what in African cultures one would refer to as a “passport”, where the object is used to demonstrate the creative talents of its creator, who would then carry it with him as identification while traveling. This work was first acquired by Dr. Stern of Montreal’s Dominion Gallery, who regularly purchased from Riopelle directly at his studio in Vanves, France. It has changed hands only once since then, and has been in the same private collection for nearly sixty years.
