EXHIBITED
Galerie Jeanne Bucher, Paris, Jean Paul Riopelle, Pastels, April 27 - June 5, 2004, traveling to Galerie Simon Blais, Montreal, June 19 - August 28, 2004

In 1962, Jean Paul Riopelle discovered the potential that pastel had to offer. It was a solid and stable colour applied directly by hand onto paper – a truly tangible link between pure pigment and hand-crafted paper. Its powdery, pasty texture allowed for the execution of perfectly controlled and velvety drawings, or more nervous and spontaneous compositions. Either way, pastel has a richness that no other medium can offer. Riopelle produced a few series of pastel works over two decades, notably in 1962, then in 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973 and 1975. Each group has a unique style, and the works dating from 1968, such as this one, are particularly effective. This drawing is both rich and spontaneous, and recalls Riopelle’s paintings of the same year, which evoke landscapes and fantastic beasts. The use of a textured handmade paper adds to the complexity and beauty of the composition, embellished with charcoal to create effects of shadows and volume.
