Edition of 30

Guido Molinari’s Continuums series followed that of the Quantifiers in its exploration of colour covering the period between 1998 and 2003. Now retired from teaching at Concordia University in Montreal, he revisited the checkerboard compositions he’d explored in the 1970s to create the Continuums.

These complex yet playful diamond-shaped compositions draw noticeably on the works of Piet Mondrian, which he’d encountered on his first trip to New York in 1955. Years later, the grid motif was taken up again, easily and comfortably. Colour demarcations were either sharp (as in the Continuum of 1998) or blurred (2001), creating an effect of vibration on the surface. Molinari worked on the Continuums until he arrived at his last series, Hommage à Mallarmé, in 2003.

Consignor proceeds from the sale of this Lot will benefit the Guido Molinari Foundation.
