The Steerage
photogravure, 1915
13 x 10 3/16 in, 33 x 25.9 cm

PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Ontario

Stieglitz took the photo that became known as The Steerage while on a trip to Paris that departed New York on May 14, 1907; he and his family were in the first class quarters of the ship Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The image was first published in the 1911 issue of Camera Work, published by Alfred Stieglitz. It featured the artist's own work, and placed the photographic medium on par with original works by the leading European and American artists he was exhibiting in his gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue. In 1915, he reprinted The Steerage in a larger size photogravure for inclusion in 291, his magazine that was published from 1915 to 1916.

This work is archivally matted but unframed, and is accompanied by the original 291 Nos. 7-8 folio, published in September – October 1915.

Available for viewing at: Heffel Toronto – 13 Hazelton Ave
