Charles Pachter, interviewed by Heffel, May 2022

Please note: this work is unframed.

The Canvas House reflects Charles Pachter’s visual dedication to Canadian history. The canvas house refers to the shelter that British general John Graves Simcoe (1752 - 1806) brought from England to the colony of York, later renamed Toronto. This simple composition, with its two-dimensionality and minimal aesthetic, illuminates and elevates the central pyramid, demonstrating Pachter’s skill in depicting imagery with bold clarity. The left and right panels of the triptych are solid red, recalling the red bars of the Canadian flag, another important symbol in his work. Pachter draws a historical connection between the early colonial settlements in Canada and the establishment of the visual identity of the modern nation that it would become.
