EXHIBITED
Musée d'art contemporain, Montreal, Fernand Leduc, December 9, 1970 - January 17, 1971

Across its dynamic surface, Reflet showcases a variety of brushwork characteristic of Fernand Leduc’s Automatist period. Burnt sienna, whites and greys are layered and scraped across the canvas in large, unrestrained horizontal sweeps, punctuated by touches of yellow, red and blue. Swirling streaks of black add rhythm to the overall composition, making our eye dance from one twist to the next. This powerful piece is reminiscent of lyrical abstraction in its composition, and abstract expressionism in its expressive and gestural approach to the medium itself.

Leduc was one of the signatories of the 1948 Refus global manifesto, a historical document that signalled an important cultural shift in Quebec. He also contributed a text to the publication titled “Qu’on le veuille ou non…ceci sera” (“Like it or not…this will be”). Later, he became the president and founding member of the Association des artistes non-figuratifs de Montréal. His works have been included in solo and group shows in major institutions such as the Musée du Québec in Quebec City, the Canadian Cultural Center in Paris and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.
