Chris Ofili
Chris Ofili
1968 -
Chris Ofili was born in Manchester and rose to prominence in the 1990s in Britain, emerging from the energetic Young British Artists (YBAs) movement with his intricately detailed mixed media paintings which reinterpret the western canon through hip-hop and blaxploitation culture. Ofili’s work generated both praise and controversy, famously incorporating elephant dung as a medium to create his beautiful kaleidoscopic surfaces. In 1998 at the age of 30, he became the first Black artist to receive the prestigious Turner Prize, and in 2003 represented Britain at the Venice Biennale.
In 2005 Ofili relocated from London to Trinidad, where he and close friend Peter Doig would often paint together. The move was an experiment intended to re-invent his painting language, and it was a return to a direct engagement with paint on canvas. This self-imposed exile from the art world resulted in a series of darkly lit monochromatic blue paintings inspired by the local landscape and culture, rich with symbolism and myth. Still living and working in Trinidad today, Ofili’s work continues to strike a balance between the dichotomies of what is hidden and revealed, between beauty and ugliness and spirituality and flesh.
In 2017 Ofili was named a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his contributions to British art and culture. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions around the world, and is included in the collections of prominent institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate, London; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the British Museum, London.
