Colleen Heslin
Colleen Heslin
1976 -
Colleen Heslin is known for her canvasses which utilize an array of stitched and dyed textiles, sewn together in rich tapestries of abstract geometric shapes.
Born in Toronto in 1976, Heslin received her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2003 and her MA from Concordia University in 2014. From 1999 to 2014, Heslin ran her project space The Crying Room, a small windowfront gallery in downtown Vancouver dedicated to exhibiting local emerging artists. In 2013, she was awarded first prize in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition.
Heslin’s work, which at times incorporates recycled domestic fabrics such as bed sheets and clothing dyed and stretched to create the illusion of texture and folds on flat interwoven surfaces, explores the possibilities of abstraction and illusion inherent in the two-dimensional surface. Applying elements of painting, sculpture and textiles, the materials and processes in Heslin’s work intersect and destabilize diverse forms of artistic practice and theory, addressing concepts of gender and labour and how they are situated within a historical art context.
