The members of the Group of Seven have a rich tradition of capturing the diverse and breathtaking landscapes that define Canada. Among them, Arthur Lismer stands out for his exceptional ability to depict the intricate beauty of the Canadian wilderness. Following an exhibition of his work at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in 1951, Lismer was enchanted by the lush landscapes of the West Coast and he subsequently returned to paint there frequently.

In Misty Morning, Vancouver Island, painted in 1953, Lismer skillfully conveys the ethereal and mystifying qualities of nature, making it a quintessential representation of his oeuvre. Misty Morning, Vancouver Island is a landscape painting characterized by its composition and style. The surface is dominated by a palette of muted greens and blues, creating a sense of tranquility and serenity. In the top right corner, a pale sun struggles to penetrate the misty sky, casting a soft, diffused light over the landscape. The mist is rendered with delicate, swirling strokes that evoke a sense of movement and fluidity, while the trees and boulders are painted with more defined muscular strokes, imparting a sense of structure and stability. This contrast in brushwork mirrors the tension between the transitory and the enduring qualities of nature. Misty Morning, Vancouver Island encapsulates the essence of Canada’s natural beauty, and serves as a testament to the Lismer's skill and commitment to depicting the beauty and mystery of the natural world.
