A group of young artists working and teaching in Regina were to make a significant and long-lasting impact on the visual culture of the Canadian Prairies and beyond. Saskatchewan-born Roy Kiyooka was an integral part of that culture, having studied under Jock Macdonald and Illingworth Kerr at the Provincial Institute of Technology in Calgary (later the Alberta College of Art). He was also an active participant in the Emma Lake Workshops. Kiyooka's relocation to Vancouver in 1960 is the only reason that Ronald Bloore did not invite him to participate in the 1961 exhibition featuring works by his peers, who became the Regina Five. Created in the same year that he published his first book of poetry, Arma is a fine example of the confident and controlled, hard-edge abstract paintings of the 1960s for which Kiyooka began to receive international recognition. The Waddell Gallery, on Manhattan's 57th street, operated circa 1963 to 1973, representing a stable of contemporary artists that included Will Barnett, Tomi Ungerer, François Dallegret and Earl Reiback.
