PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Toronto

Nakamura, in his philosophy as much as his art, was interested in geometry - in particular the underlying, universal forms that structure our perceptions of the natural world. He would explore this in his painting through complex engagements with abstraction, playing with the limits and surprises of visual observation. Suspended Reflections in a masterful example of how the artist presented his explorations. The left half of the canvas sees one of Nakamura’s most enduring subjects: a hazy forest landscape, characterized by a high, tree-lined horizon above a wide, shimmering lake surface, all rendered in closely-hued blues and greens. The right half of the canvas, divided by a subtly askew border, is unexpected. A dark-blue screen or field is punctuated by crescent-shaped windows that recall the eclipsed phases of the moon. Inside these geometries are other, smaller landscapes, very similar to the larger scene but notably different: these are inexact refractions, and we can’t be sure if we are looking at the same vista from a different position, or gazing into different dimensions entirely.
