Printmaker: Harold Klunder

Kenojuak Ashevak is one of Canada’s most celebrated artists, considered by many as the matriarch of modern Inuit art. Ashevak's oeuvre encompasses over 50 years of art-making, including the Enchanted Owl, one of the most iconic and recognizable images in the history of Canadian art.

In "Angakuit Qaijut" (Emerging Spirits) a later work of monumental size, Ashevak employs the sugar-lift etching technique introduced to Inuit print makers by Paul Machnik. The printmaking technique involves painting directly onto the metal plate, allowing Ashevak to explore new iterations of her favourite motifs and embrace free-flowing, fantastical forms. The technique also allows for a wider gradients of colour to be utilized than in previous images. The varying and vibrant yellows, purples, mauve and blues seen here were hand-coloured in collaboration with Harold Klunder.

Dimensions refer to the image height and total width of the three images. Each sheet of the triptych is framed separately, with each frame measuring 50" x 43 3/4". Please contact Heffel Calgary for further information.
