Although undated, it is entirely possible Road Near Uxbridge was painted in 1926: one of the few other works by A.J. Casson known to be of Uxbridge, The Railway Station in Uxbridge, was painted in that year, and shares this work’s rounded, graphic style, gently textural brushwork, and warm use of board-tone. By 1926 the young yet undeniably accomplished Casson had already been painting with members of the Group of Seven for most of a decade. His association with these artists began in 1919 with his apprenticeship under Group member Franklin Carmichael at the leading commercial art firm Rous & Mann Ltd. Importantly, 1926 was also the year that he would be formally invited by Carmichael to fill the vacancy left by the departed Frank Johnston and become a full member of the Group. Although surrounded by the imposing presences of these ground-breaking artists, Casson very successfully maintained his own unique voice, producing works, such as this one, imbued with a poetic sensibility and a profound understanding of the Ontario landscape.
