Acquired from a Private Collection by the present Private Collection, Montreal

Suzanne Duquet’s works are included in the major touring exhibition Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment, organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in 2021 and shown at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Glenbow Museum, and the National Gallery of Canada in 2022 and 2023.

Duquet studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, where she would later teach drawing and art for children until her retirement in 1982. In addition to her teaching career, she maintained her artistic practice and participated in important group shows, such as Contemporary Canadian painting in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Canadian Women Artists at the Riverside Museum in New York, and Femina at the Musée des beaux-arts du Québec. She was also very active in the media and presented a series of talks on Radio-Canada International and segments about visual arts on the children’s show La boîte à surprise on Radio-Canada television.

Interested in portraiture, Duquet often depicted women. In the Uninvited exhibition catalogue, art historian Anne-Marie Bouchard writes: “A feminist ahead of her time, she endeavoured to portray the inspiring women of the era – such as the journalist Judith Jasmin, or Yvette Brind’Amour, founder of Montreal’s Théâtre du Rideau Vert.” She also produced a number of self-portraits.
