Jessie Oonark is one of the most renowned artists of the Canadian Arctic, and she was especially known for her contributions to the Baker Lake Print collections. Her work is characterized by flat, bright planes of colour and the constant presence of the female figure.

Her work has figured prominently in many solo and group exhibitions throughout her career, and in 1986, the Winnipeg Art Gallery mounted a major touring exhibition of her work entitled Jessie Oonark: A Retrospective.

She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1975, and was made an officer of the Order of Canada in 1984.
